Definition
A small group of trees or tall shrubs — not quite a wood, not quite a grove — a modest, intimate gathering of trees that forms a distinct pocket within a landscape.

Origin & history
From Old French 'copeiz' (cut-over forest) — from 'coper' (to cut) — from Late Latin 'colpus' (a blow). Related to 'coppice'. A copse is technically a plot of woodland managed by periodic cutting — the trees grow back from the roots, producing dense growth. The word carries the history of managed intimacy.
