1Choose a classroom sample

A ten-minute classroom activity

Use any free sample above. The printed wheel is a paper resource, not an on-screen spinner: choose a segment by pointing at it, or spin a paperclip around a pencil held at its center.

  1. 1. Notice the word · 2 minutes

Choose a sample and print the wheel. Ask students to pick a word and predict its meaning from its sound or a context they have heard.

  2. 2. Check the context · 4 minutes

Use the flashcard sheet to compare predictions with the short meanings. Read an example aloud and ask which part of the sentence helps.

  3. 3. Use it · 4 minutes

Have pairs write their own sentence, then swap and explain their choices. Use the matching worksheet as a quick follow-up, not as the only activity.

Worked prompt: Nuanced

Short meaning: Understanding the shades, not just the black and white.

Illustrative sentence: “Her nuanced analysis of the situation surprised everyone who expected a simple verdict.”

Ask: what in this sentence helps you understand the word? Then write a different sentence with the same meaning. Read the full word entry.

Print from your browser; choose “Save as PDF” if that option is available. The print samples remain free. Interactive packs keep their existing Premium access.

Teacher notes

How teachers use Wordspun resources

Warm-up activity

Print the vocabulary wheel, choose a segment with a pointer or paperclip, then have students explain their word before looking at its meaning.

ESL vocabulary building

The flashcard sheets work well for ESL learners — each card shows phonetics, part of speech, and a definition.

Review & assessment

The matching worksheet can be used as a low-stakes quiz or a station activity for vocabulary review.
